Massive winter storm leaves widespread power outages across US

(MENAFN) A powerful winter storm sweeping across the United States left more than 821,000 people without electricity on Monday, according to outage tracking figures cited by reports.

The heaviest concentration of power failures was recorded in Tennessee, where as many as 255,452 customers experienced outages.

Reports citing weather authorities said 17 states have declared states of emergency, with rescue teams and essential resources being positioned in anticipation of worsening conditions.

Forecasters warned that regions avoiding the most intense snowfall could still face freezing rain and “catastrophic ice accumulation,” according to media accounts.

The storm has already proven deadly, with at least six fatalities reported on Sunday. Disruptions to air travel have also been extensive, as more than 16,000 flights across the country were canceled and thousands of others delayed at airports nationwide.
